Looking at the signs below two things appear to stand out. Firstly even though Birmingham City Council (BCC) has decided to remove apostrophes from the signs the full stop after the abbreviation of Saint has also been omitted, so it read ST instead of ST. the latter being being the correct way to write it. The BCC never said they were going to exclude all punctuation from their signs.

Secondly both signs appear to be of exactly the same construction i.e. cast. The BCC say', “To put all the apostrophes back would cost a small fortune”. It seems to me that the cost of removing them cost the same small fortune. Why I ask did they not think of cost saving when they decided to remove all the apostrophes in the first place.
