Most of us know this as BIG BEN although that is really the name of the bell in the tower. It started life as St Stephens Tower in 1858 and has history as that. It is often called the ‘Clock Tower’, The West Tower and now has a new name.
Following the Queen’s Jubilee it has been renamed Elizabeth Tower. Are there not enough towers, building, roads, play parks etc named after the country’s senior old biddy without having to rename existing iconic landmarks? All this achieves is a “What was it called” question in future ‘O’ level history exams. I bet question setters can’t wait for this current crop of primary school kids to grow up!
Even so, I think, people will still call it BIG BEN!
