This question was asked on a boaters group today.

Right, general rule of thumb with 12v, red lead is what, black is what?

And on a light fitting the cable coming directly from bulb is usually negative or positive?

I’m sorry but if you have to ask these questions you shouldn’t be tampering with such things!

Black is 0v Red should be 12V however there is no standard for this.

Also on a boat everything should be high side switched and fused (although I am going be doing low side switching of my lights due to using FETs). This is not rocket science people!

Also check your cable size to make sure you don't have too much voltage drop.
