Solar?

I live on board the Milly M fulltime. In the last 12 years since I commissioned her I have probably slept off her about 30 nights. Solar panels back then were not common.  Today every twat with solar panels seems to complain about those of us who do not have solar panels. It’s getting to be like the reformed smoker thing (I know this because I am one), I’ve got panels why haven’t you.

If I am not moving my boat I run my engine when I run my washing machine. If I had solar panels I would still run my engine while the washing machine is running. I am sorry if you are annoyed, but I am following the rules, and when my washing machine is finished I will turn the engine off. You could volunteer to do my washing that’s fine by me, but because you are selfish, you don’t, so I have to do it myself. While I am doing my washing I am also charging my batteries.

Yes I know there are alternatives, but unless you want to put your hand in your pocket I think you should shut up. There are rules! The one that applies here is 8-8. It is not anti-social to run an engine for hot water, for battery charging, for washing clothes etc.

It is anti-social to complain like a whinging toddler. If you don’t like it, it is not because I am anti-social, it’s because you are a twat! If you and your wife feel the need to insult people while you are out on your yearly two week jolly don’t do it with me. More importantly do not threaten me, it will not end well for you.

You might ENDEAVOUR to think before you go mouthing off to other people.

We've got solar panels on AmyJo, so what. They charge my batteries on a good day, just. I run my engine in the evenings to top the batteries up like everyone else. Whilst the engine runs wifey puts the washing machine on or does her ironing. She's good like that.
If people don't like it don't moor next to me, simples.
You carry on Maffi and let them be damned. Its life on the cut and thats all there is to it. They don't like it let them crawl back to their own moorings to sulk.

Hi Maffi,

I am having a boat blog catch up. It is lovely to read your posts again. Thank you for coming back to your blog and picking back up with writing.

The bloke on Endeavor was the same asshat who grabbed my mid-line out of my hand when I was bow hauling NB Valerie out of the first of the three Hillmorton locks last summer saying to me, "Oh for gawd's sake give me that. We don't have all day." I grabbed my line back and gave him an earful. The couple on NB September who were on the adjacent lock heard the row and came over to offer me support. Endeavour's owner is a nasty piece of work and deserves to be stuck in some endless queue on the M6.

As you succinctly put it, if you abide by the 8-8 rule they haven't a leg to stand on.

With regard to solar panels, mine provide enough energy to run my washing machine in summer without my engine on and my batteries still stay topped up. I still a have to run the engine for hot water, and run it in winter but not as long as before I had the solar panel system. It has saved me many hundreds of dollars in diesel and provided me with piece of mind, knowing my batteries are charged full every day without undue use on my engine. I also no longer have to worry about the fridge being on 24/7. As a solo boater with little knowledge of engines and batteries the piece of mind has been worth the money of having them installed.
