Roundham Lock

This strange gate end is at Roundham Lock. I don’t recall any others on the Oxford  but with my memory that’s not surprising.DSCF3003

The strapping post, you put your stern line round it as you enter the lock to close the gate and stop the boat. The horses wern't fitted with reverse.

A strapping post it is not. Strapping posts are as you say for stopping a boat and are normally, IIRC, on the side of the lock. I can understand using it to close the gate, I have done this myself on other canals, but for what puspose is the strap around the tennon joint? It seems to be a bit more than to support the joint.
