Coventry Canal Wednesday

Turning on to the Coventry Canal I watered up, emptied some rubbish and proceeded to Coventry. At the second bridge I stopped to pick up a near new pushchair that had been dumped. One of the tyres had come off. It was still attached. Wasteful!!!

Of course this turned out to be a big mistake because I ended up with a prop full of all the goodies this Canal has to offer.

Another half hour wasted! Yes I did put it in a bag and put it in the bin. There’s more.

Two more bridges and I found a shopping trolley in the water. I pulled over to get it out. Talking to a local it transpired that it has stood by the water for two days before someone pushed it in. I asked where it had come from and was pointed to TESCO down the canal a bit. So I arrive at TESCO and whilst mooring I see another trolley in the water so I drag this one out too.

Getting a bit monotonous this.

I was amazed to see the same piece of laminated A4 paper sign on the ‘New Foot Bridge’. Now that CRT has an income off the basin in the rent from Valley Cruisers maybe they can afford a proper sign.

Heading towards Ansty on Tuesday this scene on the M6 motorway was visible from a long way off.  Zoom on Phone-cam not so good. Within seconds of the fire service arriving the fire was out

What a shit day today (Wednesday) I was moored up at the top end of Ansty near the Club House. I walked Molly this morning before setting off. Along the  towpath I counted over 60 piles of doggie doo. There were some 15 bags in close proximity to the water tap though most piles were not bagged. Given that Ansty is a stand alone village it is the village dog owners that seem to be the problem.

Ansty is a good contender for the this winters

Crappiest Place  on the Canal Award

The first year I came here I removed several bin liners of doggie doo from around what appeared to be their only dog bin, by bridge 15. Don't look for it because it is no longer there, the bridge nor the bin.

I am going to write to the parish council and make a big complaint.

I shall insert this certificateCERT

Happy Birthday
Mortimer Bones
Sorry I am not there. XXXXXXX

Barby Straight

This is the fifth cassette I have found in three winters. This one is actually full. I left it there and reported it to the CRT. If you are passing Bridge 77a on the north Oxford let me know if it has gone it is on the off side south of the bridge.

Coventry Basin

We have CRT rolling out new mooring restrictions because there are not enough moorings and now they are giving away what few good moorings there are.

Valley Cruisers have moved six boats into the basin at Coventry. On the quiet side of the basin and the visitor moorings have now moved across the other side under the flats.

CRT didn’t think to dredge the basin just changed the signage and took the rent. No consultation, nothing!

Typical charity take, take, take. Bastards!!!

This is just so funny

And for my next trick

One of the numerous things my boat builder did I didn't like was to put my circuit breaker panel on one of the doors going down the steps so I either switched everything off going down) or on (going up). I moved the panel some years ago around to the side of the cupboard and left my self with a hole in the door which I tided up with a bit of frame and a piece of ply. Today the time came to improve that which I had done and make a small cupboard in the door to keep maps in.

I went off to Wickes in Rugby and bought some 6x1 par, a length of 1/2” par and the necessary screws. I took the boat down to Newbold and set to making the cupboard. I suppose it took about an hour or so.

I re-hung the door with longer screws in the hinges to take the extra weight and now I have the planned cupboard. It will have a door but I need to think about it, I have a piece of wood to use. For the time being the cupboard is fine. I shall fix a small rail across the opening  to stop the maps falling out.

This is the installed position of the cupboard. You can see the earlier re-positioned circuit breaker on the left of the picture.

And behind the door.

Looking at the top picture now reminds me I’ve been meaning to put a light under the steps to illuminate the engine bay (it was in the plans). Does anyone have a spare light? This could be an ideal opportunity to install another fuse block which I have had in my possession for sometime, Dr Bones!

South East Boaters Group

The Canal and River Trust has got together a "South East Boating sub group" Yeay! As Jeff Wyatt is the area Manager I am assuming that this was another of his ‘babies’. Such groups tend to be small so that they are not unwieldy and as such easier to manage.

A number of people are querying the make up of the group. For instance one member, James Cook, does not (at the time of writing) have a boat in the South East region. Furthermore does not own a boat with a CRT licence. Why is he a member of the group? Surely a South East Boaters Group is about boaters in the south east, is it not right the group should be made up from ‘boaters‘ and more specifically boaters who do the most of their boating in the south east. Maybe it is me. Have I missed something here.

Two other members of the group are Anne Davies and James Griffin. Both of these are hire boat operators why would such a group need representatives from ‘two’ hire boat companies. Surely such a group should have an even mix “representing all” aspects of boating in the South East?

One has to wonder if the group has been loaded because the SE Visitor Moorings Consultation failed to produce the result wanted by CRT, but I am just guessing. Maybe the CRT should get out of politics, and just run the canals, before they f**k it all up.

So Far I have, . . . .

. . . .since I left Thrupp early in October, travelled 250 miles, yet I am only 55 miles away from my starting point. I started out going to Oxford and then onto the Thames. I exited the Thames at Brentford and made my way up the GU turning right into the Paddington Arm at Bulls Bridge. I stopped in Paddington Basin a few days then went along the Regent canal to the Wenloc basin where I had lunch with Kate Saffin. Due to the problems they are having further down I did not venture onto the Hertford Canal or the River Lee. That day I returned to Little Venice and moored for the night.

The following day I set my jib for Buckby. That took me 8 days. On the ninth day I arrived in Braunston. I moored there for a while waiting for my mothers funeral. I am currently on the north Oxford at Hillmorton. There are three routes north from here, the GU, the Oxford/Coventry or the Leicester Arm. All of which CRT has chosen to close for maintenance. Any CCer wanting to go north is totally buggered. Well done CRT!

That’s alright then

I have a few grand in the bank. Last month I earned £0.48p interest. Not much is it? It probably cost more than that to calculate.

So anyone could understand why I am incensed that Wonga has put their interest rate up to 5,853% APR.

Some might think this is LOAN SHARKING but we must temper our anger with the clear and certain knowledge that the Boss has donated £800,000 to the Conservatives.

You will of course understand from this that he is above the law!

At their web site there is a box that says “90% of our customers would recommend Wonga to a friend”. Glad I don’t have friends like that. I wouldn't recommend WONGA to Satan himself. This is daylight robbery. I don't care how they justify this, this is so wrong.

Here I am at Braunston. I am waiting for the date for putting my mother to rest. Life on the canal continues apace. Many people pass saying hello. Nigel who I met earlier this year in The Jolly Boatman, Del and Al on Derwent 6, Peter who was on his way to Heyford but has missed the lock closure day, nb 5G, many people who I have no recollection of at all, oh and Keith and Ann on nb Oakfield moored behind.

I will have missed the closures by the time I am ready to move again. This will curtail my progress north, I think until Christmas week but hey ho! I will have no excuse for not getting down to work and rewriting the last scene of my play, it’s a bit weak.

During the ‘storm’ this week I lost the lid to my mini-bin off the roof so I will go fishing for that tomorrow. Might go into Daventry first for some bits.
