Lock wheeling PAH!

What is the point of lock wheeling? It is selfish, the proponents arrogant, and it throws everyone else into disarray. Why ride a bicycle at 10 mph to the next lock when your boat is still in the last lock or the one before that and will be lucky to make 3 mph.

Last November I arrived at Dudswell Lock (48) two down from Cow Roast (46). I tied up below and walked up to set the lock. There by the lock was a lady who had set the lock for her partners boat who was, se said, in the next lock (47). He was an American. Now I know Americans can be good boaters, but this guy must have Dumb or Dumber!

Twenty five minutes I waited for Mr America to do a lock and travel the 150 yards to where I waited. In that Twenty five minutes two or three other boats could have gone up that lock. On arrival he crashed his way in like he had never entered a lock before. When they exited the lock they went down the canal like a bat out of hell. NFN!

I would suggest that setting one lock while a boat is still in another lock is unbelievably inconsiderate. Yes you may be in a hurry, but  why should I loose twenty five minutes of my time? If you cant give back time you have stolen from me then don’t take it. THINK!

Mooring Pins

There is a right way and a wrong way of tying a boat to pin. A lot of people get it wrong. What difference does it make? Well don’t you think it is better to tie a 10, 15, 20, ton boat to a 1 inch steel pin rather than the 6mm holding ring.

pin Why? Because the weld can, and does, break!

DSCF2112 Use the ring only to pass the rope through so should the pin be pulled out it is still attached to the rope.

We as a nation have over 600,000 empty homes, this is good.

We as a nation have over 60,000 homeless people, this is bad.

Do the maths this is equal to 10 empty homes for each homeless person.

How can any civilised nation allow this to happen.

How can any government fail its employers so badly.

There can only be one reason for keeping homeless people on the street, GREED!

There can be only one real solution TAX empty houses. Not just a few quid but more than the increase in the value of the property

Do you know Charles Bukowski?

Born like this

Born like this
Into this
As the chalk faces smile
As Mrs. Death laughs
As the elevators break
As political landscapes dissolve
As the supermarket bag boy holds a college degree
As the oily fish spit out their oily prey
As the sun is masked
We are
Born like this
Into this
Into these carefully mad wars
Into the sight of broken factory windows of emptiness
Into bars where people no longer speak to each other
Into fist fights that end as shootings and knifings
Born into this
Into hospitals which are so expensive that it's cheaper to die
Into lawyers who charge so much it's cheaper to plead guilty
Into a country where the jails are full and the madhouses closed
Into a place where the masses elevate fools into rich heroes
Born into this
Walking and living through this
Dying because of this
Muted because of this
Because of this
Fooled by this
Used by this
Pissed on by this
Made crazy and sick by this
Made violent
Made inhuman
By this
The heart is blackened
The fingers reach for the throat
The gun
The knife
The bomb
The fingers reach toward an unresponsive god
The fingers reach for the bottle
The pill
The powder
We are born into this sorrowful deadliness
We are born into a government 60 years in debt
That soon will be unable to even pay the interest on that debt
And the banks will burn
Money will be useless
There will be open and unpunished murder in the streets
It will be guns and roving mobs
Land will be useless
Food will become a diminishing return
Nuclear power will be taken over by the many
Explosions will continually shake the earth
Radiated robot men will stalk each other
The rich and the chosen will watch from space platforms
Dante's Inferno will be made to look like a children's playground
The sun will not be seen and it will always be night
Trees will die
All vegetation will die
Radiated men will eat the flesh of radiated men
The sea will be poisoned
The lakes and rivers will vanish
Rain will be the new gold
The rotting bodies of men and animals will stink in the dark wind
The last few survivors will be overtaken by new and hideous diseases
And the space platforms will be destroyed by attrition
The petering out of supplies
The natural effect of general decay
And there will be the most beautiful silence never heard
Born out of that.
The sun still hidden there
Awaiting the next chapter.

Christmas Boating

I left Braunston just after lunch  Christmas Eve saying good bye to Tony on my way past.

Arrived in Rugby after dark and moored behind nb Oakfield. I spent the evening with Keith and Ann. I did some litter picking on Christmas morning and later spent some time with Tom and Jan on nb Waiouru in the afternoon.

Boxing Day nb Oakfield left before I got up. Tesco was open. (I don’t mass buy for Christmas).I left Rugby on my way to All Oaks Wood, however, I saw Terry and Linda on nb 5G at Newbold. As it had started to rain I accepted an invitation to tea. We spent the evening in the Barley Mow.

My hangover appeared about 2.30 in the morning. I left Newbold about 11.00 Saturday morning and arrived in Coventry Basin about 5 o’clock. No one else here.

When I arrived at Brownsover Christmas Eve I put my rubbish in the bin and the bin was almost full to the brim, but the lid did close. On Christmas Day I set about collecting the rubbish in the park. I collected two bags full of which this is one.DSCF2092 And still I managed to get the lid to close. However Boxing Day ‘civilians’ arrived and dumped their excess Christmas waste in the bin. The lid now doesn’t close and I can imagine several others turning up with their rubbish and dumping it around the bin. I doubt it will be collected  until the New Year, which means the rats will end up having a field day.DSCF2101I always thought this bin was provided for boaters but this chap just rocked up and dumped his rubbish. Now he may be a boater, but he came with 4 friends and any way household rubbish is is not boat rubbish.

However  later in the morning this lot appeared just dumped out of a car window. I know it wasn’t there yesterday cos it was spotless, Merry Christmas Brownsover .

Steel Dragons

There is a place we used to go down by the riverside,
The meadow grass was soft and cool, the trees there grew with pride.
We played there all the summer long in this haven from the crowds.
We'd rest awhile and there enjoy the passing of the clouds.

We would fight the evil knights and dragons we would slay,
'Til twilight came to tell us of the closing of the day.
Life was oh so simple then, no worries did we crave.
At night in bed we all would sleep the slumber of the brave.

Then one day a man arrived with a tripod and a scale.
He measured to the riverbank and back up to the hale.
And when his task was over he took his tools away,
We never thought that he'd come back…but then again he may.

Late in the summer we awoke and heard a thunderous roar,
Steel dragons came into the lane and through the meadow tore.
They started work by tearing the grass from off the land.
By the time that they had finished not one tree did they let stand.

Next there came the lorries with yards and yards of steel.
But no one ever asked us exactly how we feel.
The place where we all went, to spend our time in play,
Was totally destroyed in the space of just one day.

Giant concrete pipes were sunk into the river silt.
Steel skeletons erected and to the sky were built.
Piles and piles of tarmac were laid upon the ground.
Then someone deigned to tell us, "This was to be 'Newtown'".

The Dragons kept on eating the grass from off the land,
And still no one came to tell us exactly how we stand.
Then one day came the people; we knew just what they'd say,
"We're sorry we can't live here, there's nowhere nice to play."

The buildings are now rotting as the fabric falls away.
Steel skeletons lay rusting in the sadness of the day.
If only they had stopped to think, "What will our work become?"
There'd still be children playing, by the river, in the sun.

Wise words

I have never owned a Gibson

But I would make an exception for this with its $5,999 price tag.

Corporation Tax

We are currently losing billions and billions of pounds in Corporation Tax every year because other countries have lower tax rates. Amazon, Starbucks etc pay no CT at all.

Ok so lets look at things differently. Big corporations pay their taxes in countries where the %age is advantageous to the company ie why pay 50% here when they can pay 40% elsewhere (not the real figures).

What George needs to do is make those companies want to pay their taxes here.

So surely if we set our corporation tax at 30% then the big boys will be falling over themselves to pay taxes here. Not only that but other companies who don't have offices in the UK will also want to take advantage of the lower tax rates.

OK so we will not get all the taxes we should now get, but we will get a lot and possibly a lot more on top. 30% of something is better than 50% of nothing.

It’s a win win situation, No?

So now I have sorted this out can I be the next Chancellor of the Exchequer, well I have more qualifications than George ‘the Nob’ Osborne.

If I do something and a person dies then I am responsible. It may be that if I couldn’t possibly have known the outcome of my actions then I may not be held directly responsible. However if, after I have been told that people are dying because of my actions, I continue to do that which is causing the deaths then I am surely  guilty of murder.

So since the first death directly or indirectly caused by an ATOS decision (who were acting on the instruction of Iain Duncan Smith) it is right that there is a responsibility on IDS and ATOS to stop that which is killing so many people? The lies made by ATOS about peoples fitness for work or lack of it are an act of gross incompetance for personal gain, and should be jailable offences.

That ATOS employed medically trained people to carry out the interviews can only be seen as a callous ploy to absolve themselves of responsibility even though such responsibility rests firmly on their shoulders: because they were pressurising the interviewers into reporting results that were at odds with the truth.

The deaths should be investigated under H&S regs and charges of Corporate manslaughter as a very minimum should be levelled at IDS and ATOS executives. Let us not forget the buck stops with the PM. They had all been told that their actions were killing people. They all know they are guilty of murder to one degree or another.

Our Government is no better than a whole host of other evil dictators who see their own lives as far more important than the people who pay them.

The key players are clearly guilty of manslaughter or murderer, but will they ever be bought to court to answer for their crime. Yes if we shout loud enough!

They’re what!

Gearbox fixed I set off. Here I am at Napton. I am one of two boats on the 48s and there are 3 boats on the 14 day moorings. Plenty of room for another half dozen or more. So why are there two boats moored up on the water point?

The selfishness of some boaters is un-fecking-believable.

Gearbox and Drive plate

I returned to Braunston on the 27th of November. I came back here because the clutch in the box was shot So I need to have have my Gear Box removed taken for repair and then refitted. It took a while for RCR to come get the gearbox out 5 of December. I was hoping to have it back in the following Friday 12 but they came on Monday 15.

Well the plan was to also change the drive plate at the same time because it appeared worn, but on Monday I was told the drive plate didn’t need changing after all. Now my engine has done nearly 10,000 hours and I really didn’t fancy having the gear box out again in a couple of months time so we sourced a new drive plate to fit. However the engineer can’t come till this morning 18 December so I have been sitting here in Braunston for three weeks waiting, waiting, waiting.

All the while it was me who had to keep phoning them to find out what was happening.

I am all in favour of protecting rare species of plants at sites around the country. However when people are building sites especially to become  SSSIs then I think we have to draw the line.

It is not acceptable to dredge a section of the Grantham Canal at a cost of £179,000 to promote the growth or a rare ‘pond’ plant that isn’t even growing in the canal yet. Why not plant it in a …………. pond?

CRT are dredging the Grantham Canal between Harby and Redmile so that plants that are being propagated by college students at Brooksby Melton College, can planted in the spring once the dredging work has been completed.

When the Grantham Canal opens (if it ever does) these people will want to control or even prevent boats going down the line.

How fecking stupid can CRT be!

I have a vision from this of Ninja Nature Terrorists sneaking out in the black of night planting rare plants to justify their own existence. I suppose the more rare plants these people sneak into the environment the bigger their budget gets.

In the interest of Honesty!

The National Bargee Travellers Association (NBTA) recently posted a court ruling about the distance a boat did or didn’t have to move as a continuous cruiser. In effect telling all and sundry that they didn’t have to comply with CRT rules. The NBTA were very selective in which bits of the courts decision they chose to print. What is interesting is the bits they chose to leave out were in direct opposition to their thinking and in effect what they say doesn’t change the status quo one iota. What NBTE did quote was sub-paras of 7.22, but tellingly not 7.21 or 7.22.1;

7.21 It seems to me that the expression
‘navigation’ clearly means the process of taking any purposeful journey from one specific point to another by water. The addition of the words "bona fide" import an entirely subjective element and merely mean that the journey must be undertaken for genuine purposes and not for the purpose of circumventing the legislation, when in reality the intention of the boat owner is to stay as nearly as possible in the same place.

7.22.1 It is, as I have already said several times, unnecessary for me to comment on whether the guidelines match the legislation. I do so in only two respects and with the express proviso that this does not form part of the decision.

So from this I gather the status ‘Continuous Avoider’ aka Bridge Hopper (those who are circumventing the legislation) is now no longer in the boaters dictionary.

Simple solution

£35 for a toilet roll holder For £35 I could have got the Holder the shower rack and four cushions and a handful of change for lunch. Why are these people (who purport to be our superiors) not clever enough to be able to do that.B4uhxTuCcAArDNYAs long as these public servants are allowed ideas above ‘our’ station this abuse will continue. The solution is simple. Only allow them to buy from IKEA. After all it is only a second home. They will be spending most of their time staying in a hotel around the corner anyway.

They are the peoples employees and what is good enough for us should be good enough for them.

I must……

…have topped the half million visits by now.

An Anatomy of Trolling

Aside from its angling connotation trolling is now an internet phenomenon. I think the term comes from pre-internet days when some one would ‘cast’ a controversial comment into a discussion. There would always be one member, or more, of the group who would ‘take the bait’ and depending on which way the discussion was going it would warm up a bit, maybe change tack or even kill the conversation completely. The caster could then be said to have ‘reeled ‘em in’. The modern day take on trolling is as in Troll under the bridge

The same goes for today on the internet. A perfectly reasonable discussion is taking place and occasionally someone drops in a comment sometimes to stir things up a bit or designed to cause mayhem. Some people are very good at that although why that is a problem I don’t understand.

Today it is not the same world we used to live in. It would seem we all have to ‘play nicely’ and be good little ‘girls and boys’. There is no shortage of people who will come along and let you know you are not ‘behaving’. And they are really annoying. If I want mothering I know where to go. I don’t need some anally retentive degenerate to mother me.

These people are usually PC fascists. Now I know people don’t like that term but they are. PCFs are out there and becoming an increasingly large group who think they have some god given right to tell each and every one of us about manners and playing nicely, how we should behave, and how we should talk to people.

I for one actually hate them because these people are the real trolls. They hide behind their ‘holier than thou’ smarmy smile As soon as the PCFs have made their point others in the group begin to align with them. That’s when the bullying really starts. Those who align dump on the person the PCFs are trolling and though seemingly inert start posting comments that oppose the objects view irrespective of whether he is right or wrong, or that have nothing to do with the topic such as changing the discussion to cookery. This is indeed a very immature thing to do and serves no purpose but to sideline the poor person who has an opposing view with the intention of making him leave the conversation. Like it or not this is a classic bullying tactic! We don’t want you in our club get out!

Eventually a moderator may step in. His/her actions could take one of three paths. Firstly they can delete comments you have made. This is censorship and is practiced by people who do not really understand what it is they are actually doing. Secondly they can delete whole post from the original opening post down to the last comment. This again is censorship, but not only have they denied the bullied person their say, they have also denied other contributors in the thread their say and of course removed any evidence of the problem. Should the bullied person wish to complain he has no evidence? Thirdly they can exclude the bullied person from the group. This is a big no-no. I think if this action is required it should be put before a magistrate. I say this because the bullied person is the victim and to exclude him because of his opinion is no different to excluding someone because of his colour/gender/sexual preference etc.

The problem with the PCFs is they can’t be wrong! Their first comment to you is designed to make you leave the conversation. And a lot of people would for an easy life. Once you have left the PCFs get a heightened idea of who he is and proclaims the victory. Further more this ‘victory’ only serves to spur him on to further attacks on others. Even his ‘aligned’ enclave of cyber-bullies are not exempt should they say the wrong thing. It’s a bit like ‘Do ya wanna be in my gang’.

Of course if you spot these people and stick to your guns and point out that they are the trolls they come back with something like “And we call that Projection LOL” Well it not funny so why LOL! And he is simply trying to hammer home his POV with his cyber bully gang. He has been caught out and rather than just give in he bites harder. It is at this point that you should leave because there is no way he will let you get away with showing him up in front of the gang.

Despite your protestations that what you said was relevant to the thread he will continue to justify his trolling. Here you have to terminate because you know you are right and he is wrong and in a short while the mods will start deleting comments and you may well be proven right.

So lets analyse a conversation I had recently. It all started innocently with the three posts

This is not the first time he has said this in fact this is often his first comment on a thread.

And then about an hour later

It was a couple of hours before I saw these comments and it struck me that there was maybe some irony in these comments in that they seemed to oppose each other a bit and I kinda said so. I see nothing wrong with what I wrote.

Well that, to me is where it started because Darren let off a fire cracker with this,

He didn’t originally say he saw the funny side of it. Had he done so maybe I wouldn’t have made my comment. I definitely wasn’t trolling. However his next two sentences are totally out of order and if he felt so strong about it, it could have been dealt with by PM. I most certainly wasn’t trolling and it is polite to mention the person to whom you are referring. And then he followed up with ….people whom cycle…..I can only think he was trying to be clever and it failed. Most people can’t use ‘whom’ in the right place and so don’t even try. This was so blatantly wrong. What was he trying to prove? (I wonder if I just did)

This obviously got up his nose because this was his next post,

Now I don’t understand this. This oik is a nob. I think he is making up the rules as he goes along. His response is quite wrong. What has actually happened is I have challenged him and that is a no-no. I most certainly was not trolling, just bringing two statements together to illuminate the position. Its not my fault he is incapable of expressing himself clearly.

I responded with

Which in itself is a put down I suppose. I have seen him on FB before and he makes a habit of this sort of behaviour so I told him so. Having not been trolling anyone, today, I pointed out that he was the problem

Well that was definitely a challenge because he then came back with a time honoured rebuke which to mind proved my position. I could see this coming a mile away.

Oh Darren what a nob you are. Yes projection is the right word but aimed at the wrong person. You are the troll and you are just trying to lay it on me. I can now no longer be bothered with this shit.

Of course then in comes the Moderator. Her comments were only serving her purpose of being a moderator. I had left the conversation I was not likely to comment again. She is not reminding everyone that there are rules she was reminding me and Darren. It wasn’t ‘most unpleasant’, it wasn’t nice others might have stepped away at the first rebuke, but ‘most unpleasant’ I don’t think so.

Here her comments are made to reinforce her position as a moderator. She did however leave the first three comments on the thread

I don’t like censorship in any form so I had to say that.

Others agreed with me!

In all things internet there will be those who for what ever reason have to give people a virtual slap and calling someone a troll is just that, it’s a weapon of control and (I probably do it more than I realise) depending who it is used on can be just as effective as a tazer. The trouble is once this cat is let out of the bag it is difficult to put it back. Even if complaints are made the jibe is out there and that just may colour the judgement of others when they are dealing with you. I know I am out spoken but when I say something it is considered and heart felt. Yeah you may not like what I say but I have a right to say it. Yes you can challenge what I say but slapping is as out of order on the net as it would be in face to face confrontations.

The Greenway Code for Towpaths

1. Share the space consider other people and the local environment whenever you’re on a Greenway. Remember some people may move less predictably, for example young children or those with visual or mobility impairments.

2. Drop your pace considerate sharing of the limited towpath space is the key. Jogging and cycling are welcome, but drop your pace in good time and let people know you are approaching by ringing a bell or politely calling out before waiting to pass slowly.

3. Pedestrians have priority towpaths are ‘Greenways’ or shared use routes where pedestrians have priority and vehicles, except bicycles and mobility aids, are generally excluded.

4. Be courteous to others – A smile can go a long way. Abusive or threatening behaviour is not acceptable and should be reported to the Police.

5. Follow signs and obey local by-laws they are there for the safety of everyone. Cyclists should dismount where required and use common sense in busy or restricted areas, recognising that pedestrians have priority.

6. Give way to oncoming people beneath bridges whether they are on foot or bike and be extra careful at bends and entrances where visibility is limited.

7. When travelling in large groups, especially if you are running or cycling, please use common sense and give way to others.

8. Try to avoid wearing headphones as this makes you less aware of your surroundings possible hazards and others sharing the same space.

9. Keep dogs under control ideally using a short lead on busy towpaths and clean-up after them. Dog fouling is very unpleasant and is a health hazard.

10. At all times, keep children close to you and encourage them to learn and follow the Greenway Code for Towpaths.

….would anyone deface the post. This is just above RAVENS Lock in Berkhampstead. This particular post is at the top of the lock just after the lock mooring.

There has been some controversy there of late with one of the residents complaining about people trampling the flowers she has planted along the towpath side.

Well it’s a bit silly planting flowers where people are bound to walk while mooring up. Maybe the silly old biddy needs someone to ask her not to put flowers there.DSCF1993

I dont care….

….whose boat this is. This is not about who, but what. This was taken outside a London Tesco Store. This is totally unacceptable and does nothing but bring boaters into disrepute. Two things: there are plenty of bollards, DSCF1982and it is bad practice to use a centre line to moor a boat. In flood conditions a tied centre line can roll a boat on its side. Centre lines are for handling a boat. If you don’t  believe me ask BMF RYA & CRT! DSCF1983 ARRRRGGGHHHHH!

Word Processors

I have a 5000 word story. Its a good ’un. Equivalent to a Times Best Seller. Nearly 18,000 reads. I have spent the last 3 hours formatting the story for publication. No not editing but just getting the font right the layout right and a couple of small graphics in the right places. This should have taken half an hour max!

Why did it take so long. Well last year I decided to splash out on a new computer and at the same time I paid for the latest version of WORD. For me to pay for a program is unheard of but I thought just this once why not.

Well WORD 2013 is something else. Why when they bring out the new version is it so completely different from the previous one? 2013 doesn’t look like any other version, it doesn’t feel’ the same, all the features are shuffled around and not in places you are used to. In fact it is just like I had never used a word processor before. Simple tasks take an age to perform once I had worked out where stuff was. Drop down menus contained different commands the second time you opened then up. Some menus would dropdown and when you tried to select would close up again before you could select your option.

I wanted to put two text boxes in but slightly rotate them as if it was a hand written piece. With one it worked fine the other the box would turn but the text stayed still. Nothing I could do would make it rotate with the box as you can see below. In fact there was another small box that wouldn’t playpengrab I don’t know why MS have to so drastically change the programs around. It serves no useful purpose. People with their MS Cert will tell you it is easier for new users. I cant see it, but even so what about the millions upon millions of old users. Those of us who have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours learning these programs only to be told we have to do it all again.

I am not against modernising, but the whole point of windows is that you can go to any computer and work. At least they could have a ‘old’ version button like they used to have for Windows. I remember the old 80/20 rule. 80% of the users use 20% of the features yet MS don’t program this in. There is a reason why the ribbon says File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Windows, Help. Because we know what’s in there. The same reason why the close window button is/was always in the top right hand corner. You wire your brain to to the system. then they change it and you have to rewire it to the new system stress, Stress, STRESS for no reason other than the new Uni grad wants to fecking play.

Would it not make sense to have a new feature menu and you could tick those bits you think might be useful and forget the rest.

The program I write this on has gone through many morfs but every version they bring out changes something to how it was in a previous incarnation. Currently the font button is hidden inside a dialogue box. That’s two extra clicks. Well it was ok in the ribbon where it has spent many useful years. I know two clicks isn’t much but there are nearly 4000 posts on this blog an I have to change the font for every one of them. There is nowhere I can set the standard font I want 12. For some odd reason it is set at 9.8 a size that isnt even in the menu. The word count used to be in the bottom status bar, now its two clicks to open a dialogue box.

And have you noticed you cannot ask for the older version? You have to have what they say.

I feel quite sure the people who update these programs never have to use them or they would know how fecking pointless their lives are. After all how many more features does a word processor need.
