Why Oh why Oh why

Imagine, if you will, you are a child, a very cute child. You have a very loving family and you are the happiest child. One day some people come to your home and take you away from your family. They take you to a country that is nothing like your home. They put you in a concrete compound on your own and people come to oggle at you. You don’t speak their language. You miss your mum! You’re sad.Af_elephant__Circo_Marin__Italy_092014__86_

Bereft and alone Baby stands on tarmac

There are 40 elephants in Europe to whom this has happened. They live in zoos and circuses There is little or no chance they will ever be repatriated.

Our friend Will Travers wants to build a sanctuary to get them all together to live out their lives in peace.

Hi Maffi,

My basic beliefs are that it is wrong to cage animals.

However, having recently seen an excellent television documentary about a UK zoo, and the love, care and respect which the keepers bestow on the animals, I have changed my views.

Until the world is rid of the pure evil of those who murder elephants for their tusks, and rhinos for their horns, there is a need to ensure the survival of endangered species.

Well managed and regulated zoos are a solution.

Although not an ideal solution, surely better than to lose a species forever ?

No sorry! It might be ok if there is a 'family' but to keep an individual animal is unbelievably cruel however much love and care is given.

Baby the elephant in the pictures needs other elephants to interact with. She spends her time swaying back and forth all day. This has given her a growth on her side. She is bored out of her mind.

She needs family and social interaction with her own kind.

A zoo is a prison. She has done nothing wrong

I agree, Maffi, it is tragic to see what amounts to a seriously disturbed animal in a zoo - the rocking is the manifestation of emotional disturbance in animals - just as in humans.
If you haven't yet read it, find and read 'We are all completely beside ourselves'. Wonderful story wonderfully written and very thought provoking.
Cheers, Marilyn

Reason for bringing elephants into zoo's is because of the ivory hunters in the african home lands.

This will continue until local people become sufficiently aware that their ivory poaching is dangerously depleting the elephant herds.

No sir, If you believe that you'll believe in fairies.

Not all elephants in captivity suffer the fate of this one's retched life and whilst I agree with our sentiments I do feel not all in captivity suffer.

Chester zoo has a family of elephants and its clear from their behaviour they are thriving. Another recent addition to the family bares this out.

The elephants have a large enclosure that keeps them both entertained and happy. More should be done in other zoos to Model Chester zoo's example.
